Call before you dig. That’s a phrase that’s often heard, especially during the warmer months when the construction seasons ramps up for the year.
Shannon Doka, Executive Director of Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance says April has been declared Dig Safe Month as that’s typically when people start their digging projects with spring in the air.
She explains what residents should do if they’re planning on taking up a digging project.
“If anyone is considering a digging project, that’s anything that disturbs the ground, you’re best to go to sask1stcall.com or clickbeforeyoudig.com and that will get you started to create a ticket and get your locates done.”
Every year, thousands of buries wires, cables and pipelines are damaged by excavations, this leads to approximately $1 billion dollars annually in damages across Canada.
Doka says on average they see over 700 damages due to digging projects each each in the province.
2022 will make a gradual return to some in-person activities to promote Safe Digging Month. Contractor breakfasts will take place on April 27th in Lloydminster and Estevan.
