One member of the Canadian Armed Forces went missing on Monday while deployed in Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Winnipeg.
Master Sailor Duane Earle is a Boatswain from Winnipeg.
It is believed he accidentally fell overboard while the ship was about 500 nautical miles west of San Francisco, en route back to Esquimalt after being deployed to the Asia-Pacific region on Operations PROJECTION and NEON.
He was not identified as missing until later in the day, at which point HMCS Winnipeg turned back along its route and began a search. The search effort was joined by the Royal Canadian Air Force and United States Coast Guard.
The Prime Minister says the search has been called off. He says all Canadians mourn the loss of Master Sailor (MS) Duane Earle.
