The Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon has done an historical abuse case review and a report has been released which lists nine cases involving serious misconduct by either clergy or lay employees.
There were two committees involved in the process. Of the nine cases, three were previously publicly reported so their names are included. In three others, a credible claim couldn’t be established, so the names aren’t being released.
In two cases, victims have requested the names of the offenders not be published. The ninth case is a Code of Conduct violation by an employee allegedly accessing pornography on a computer at a local parish. The name of the employee, who has since died, is not being released.
The review process found ten known victims in these cases of serious misconduct or sexual abuse. One was a boy under 13 years old, five were teenage boys, one was a man and there were three women victims. None of these are related to residential schools. The report says the Saskatoon Diocese didn’t have any residential schools.
The Diocese has made updates to its Safeguarding Action Plan including working to implement a 24-hour hotline for those who wish to remain anonymous when reporting serious misconduct or sexual abuse. And, to especially support those who may come forward presenting allegations of abuse or seeking advice and support, the Diocese commits to reviewing and altering existing intake and investigation processes to become more complainant-focused, simplified, and accessible.
