Two new low-floor Access Transit buses have been added to the City of Saskatoon’s fleet.
Access Transit Manager, Tracey Davis, says the low floor option is similar to what you would see on the fixed-route fleet, which has been completely switched over to the more accessible buses.
She explains that with the older versions of the Access Transit buses, your options are to climb stairs with the assistance of the operator or enter from the lift, which can take awhile to lower and raise back up again, while you are out in the weather.
Davis says with the low floor access, riders with mobility devices such as power chairs are now able to get on without any assistance.
During peak hours, there are 21 Access Transit buses on the road and the hope is to have all of them replaced with the newer buses over time.
Part of the funding comes from the Provincial Transit Assistance for People with Disabilities program.
Because the fixed-route Saskatoon Transit buses all have low floor access, the City encourages Access Transit customers to give them a try to add flexibility and spontaneity to their transportation options.
