Athabasca NDP MLA Buckley Belanger has resigned. Leader Ryan Meili has issued a statement saying, “We’re sorry to see Mr. Belanger leave our caucus and are grateful for his service as Saskatchewan’s longest-serving Indigenous MLA.
Belanger was first elected to the legislature in 1995 and re-elected in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2016, and 2020. He was a member of the Economy committee and deputy chair of the Intergovernmental Affairs and Justice committee.
Meili says, “Our focus now will be making sure there is a strong voice for Northwest Saskatchewan in the legislature as the Sask Party has repeatedly shown complete disregard for the concerns of the people of Athabasca.”
