SGI says during their August safety spotlight police reported almost 55-hundred aggressive driving or speeding offences. Other offences include 418 for impaired driving, 799 distracted driving and 411 inappropriate or no seatbelt/child restraint.
The Crown Corporation’s traffic safety focus for August was driver safety on grid roads. SGI’s Tyler McMurchy says grids pose challenges, such as uncontrolled intersections, more wildlife and farm equipment. He notes there is also something a bit unique with impaired driving on rural roads. Of the fatalities on rural roads, about half of them involve impaired driving and almost all of them are single vehicle rollovers.
In September, SGI is focusing on impaired driving along with school safety, speeding and pedestrians. They are focusing the message on young drivers and stress that there is zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol for all new drivers be it someone 21 years of age and younger or those still in the Graduated Driver Licensing Program.
