Blake Schreiner has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 17 years. Schreiner was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his spouse Tammy Brown. On January 29th, 2019, Brown was found with approximately 80 stab wounds in her River Heights home. A second-degree verdict usually carries a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years. The Crown had argued for no chance of parole for 18 years while the defence argued for 12 years.
When the verdict was handed down in June, the Crown referred to the murder as “domestic abuse gone to the extreme”. Justice Ron Mills rejected the defence’s argument that Schreiner was not criminally responsible because he was suffering from a schizotypal personality disorder at the time of Tammy Brown’s murder. Schreiner was originally charged with First Degree Murder, although Justice Mills ruled that Schreiner did not plan Brown’s death.
Schreiner and Brown had two young kids together and were in a common-law relationship at the time of the murder.
