Rain and snow and the possibility of slippery road conditions is coming through parts of Saskatchewan. Environment Canada meteorologist in Saskatoon, Terri Lang, says tomorrow afternoon (Wed), the temperature will fall below freezing, so the roads will ice up quickly. Total snowfall for Saskatoon and area is expected to be in the 5 centimetre range. Snowfall amounts will increase the further north and east you move from Saskatoon.
The Battlefords area, and then tracking south and east to Saskatoon and further south to Outlook and Watrous are under a special weather statement. Snow is expected to begin tonight and continue tomorrow before tapering off Thursday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected along and north of the Yellowhead highway corridor, and that’s where Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning. It includes Meadow Lake, then heading southeast through Prince Albert, Melfort and Southeast to the Kamsack region. Communities can expect about 10 cm tomorrow, and localized accumulations in some areas could near 20 centimetres before the snow tapers off on Thursday.
The City of Saskatoon is preparing for the snow and the risk of freezing rain in the forecast, which is expected to begin tonight (Tues), and advises morning commuters to plan to leave early, and use extra caution. It’s expected the roads will be icy for the first time in many months.
The City says in a news release crews will be applying salt at slippery locations throughout the night, beginning with the highest traffic areas.
If there is more than 5 centimetres of snow, all priority streets will be graded. When it’s safe to do so, you can report icy road conditions to the 24-hour Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476.
