Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Chief Bobby Cameron says there are a lot more documents pertaining to Indian Residential School survivor narratives than the ones to be released by the Federal Government. Cameron adds that all original documents that Ottawa has in its possession must also be released.
Federal Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister recently announced the release of a volume of I-R-S survivor narratives to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
“We applaud the release of these narratives, but they are just a small portion of the mountains of IRS records and documents that they have in their possession. It’s a good start. All I-R-S records belong in the hands of their rightful owners; our First Nations survivors, their families, and their communities” says F-S-I-N Chief Bobby Cameron. “We expect the Federal Government to release all of the IRS documents, ensuring that they contain all of the original documents in their entirety. No more legal wrangling to keep them hidden. This is a necessary step for many survivors in their own healing journey. Canadians need to learn the real history. We know what happened. Those records contain proof. They must be released.”
