The new year started off bitterly cold and then went through a number of sharp temperature increases and decreases. In the end, the monthly mean temperature for ten provincial cities was normal or slightly below normal.
There was a lot more variability in precipitation levels. Meadow Lake and Prince Albert received quite a bit more snow than other locations. When the snow was melted, the two centres in the northern grainbelt had between 23 and 24 millimetres. Those numbers were 40 to 50 percent above the long-term average.
Saskatoon had 11.7 millimetres or 79 percent of normal precipitation. The numbers were even lower for Regina, Moose Jaw and Swift Current. You can check all of the statistics below. (Charts are courtesy of Environment and Climate Change Canada)
