The Saskatchewan RCMP is aware of demonstrations expected this weekend at the North Portal and Northgate border crossings. A news release from the RCMP says their objective in policing any demonstrations is to restore the orderly flow of traffic as safely as possible. To do that, the preference is communication and a measured response.
Operational details are not being disclosed, to ensure the safety of officers and the public, however, demonstrators without access to a staging area on private land will be turned away. The RCMP advises anyone expecting to cross the border this weekend to check for road closure information and watch for updates.
While border blockades have supposedly ended, protesters continue to clog Ottawa’s downtown. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says part of the action they are taking through the Emergencies Act is tracking financial information of protesters.
She warns that if your truck is being used in the protests, your corporate accounts will be frozen, and the insurance on your vehicle will be suspended. “The consequences are real and they will bite.” Chrystia explains that there are safeguards in place, and she assures Canadians that the government, law enforcement and financial service providers have been working on this “very carefully.”
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says border crossings have reopened, but protesters trying to block the Ambassador bridge again between Windsor and Detroit were thwarted by police. He says the impact it would have for it to be closed cannot be overstated, because it’s the busiest trade corridor in Canada. (CJGX)
