Saskatchewan’s Premier suggests new federal gun legislation is problematic and goes after legitimate gun owners.
The new measures would seek to cap the number of handguns in Canada and would allow for the automatic removal of gun licences from people who commit domestic violence or engage in criminal harassment.
Scott Moe says, “So this is, you know, nothing more than virtue signaling by the federal government that we see time and time and time again regardless of the topic.”
The Premier does say he is in favour of some of the new legislation like increasing fines and penalties of those committing property crime in stealing a weapon or firearm or using a firearm in a property crime.
The new measures would also create a new “red flag” law that would see those considered a danger to themselves or others surrender their firearms to police.
In addition, the new measures seek to implementing a national freeze on handguns to prevent individuals from bringing newly acquired handguns into Canada and from buying, selling, and transferring handguns within the country.
The number of registered handguns in Canada increased by 71 per cent between 2010 and 2020 and handguns were the most serious weapon present in the majority of firearm-related violent crimes between 2009 and 2020.
