The province has proclaimed September 30th as Truth and Reconciliation Day in Saskatchewan, recognizing it as an important day of remembrance and reflection for those who have suffered harm and to honour those whose lives were lost at residential schools. On Friday, all provincial government buildings will lower their flags to half-mast, and the Provincial Capital Commission will turn certain park lights orange around Wascana Centre, including the steps of the legislative building.
Orange Shirt Day is also commemorated annual on September 30th. It’s an Indigenous-led movement to recognize the harm the residential school system did to children’s safety, self-esteem and well-being. Residents are encouraged to wear orange to recognize the day.
Canada proclaimed September 30th the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation last year, with federally legislated workplaces getting a statutory holiday.
