Members of the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners voiced condolences to family, friends and co-workers of the Canadian police officers who were killed in the line of duty recently. Police Chief Troy Cooper noted that Constables Devon Northrup and Morgan Russel of the South Simcoe Police Service in Ontario were shot and killed on October 11th and their joint funeral was Thursday. He also acknowledged the on-duty death of Burnaby RCMP officer, Constable Shaelyn Yang, who was fatally stabbed on Tuesday. “It’s important I believe we acknowledge these officers and recognize the incredible and ultimate sacrifice they made while serving their communities.” Constable Yang was a mental health and homeless outreach officer.

On Facebook, the National Police Federation says these tragedies are an unfortunate but stark reminder that police officers face risk every time they show up for work. “This marks the fifth on-duty death of a police officer in Canada in just as many weeks. It has been a devastating month for police officers and families nationwide.”
