The Saskatoon Police Service is going to ask for an additional $90,000 in funding when the Board of Police Commissioners holds its monthly meeting Thursday.
The extra dollars are to replace the Indoor Range at the Saskatoon Police Service headquarters.
The Range Replacement Capital Project was approved at an estimated cost of $180,000. A report to the commission indicates the Range Target System was to be replaced in 2020 but with COVID-19 the contractor couldn’t complete the replacement.
In 2021, the opportunity to replace the indoor shooting range was again missed due to Covid restrictions. In 2022, replacing the Range was again contemplated, but it was determined there were no longer sufficient funds in the approved Capital Budget project for Range Replacement due to price increases.
The price tag is now estimated at $270,000. The Saskatoon Police Service, in its request for more funding, says having a fully functional Range allows members of the police service to train and meet the necessary proficiency level as dictated by the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
If a funding request is $100,000 or less, it can be approved by the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners without going to City Council.
