The federal government has allocated an additional 100 nominations to the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program, bringing the total nominations for this year to 7,350. The provincial government says in a news release that these nominations, the highest target in the program’s history, will result in almost 20,000 newcomers coming to Saskatchewan over the next two years, in addition to the approximately 6,000 immigrants per year through federal streams.
Immigration and Career Training Minister, Jeremy Harrison says the SINP allocation helps the province address the growing needs of the provincial economy.
The province is advocating for more autonomy over immigration.
In July of 2022, the provincial government proposed the Saskatchewan Immigration Accord, modelled on the current agreement the federal government has with Quebec, which would allow Saskatchewan to set its own immigration levels and select skilled immigrants aligned with what the labour market needs.
