A joint statement from the NDP Energy Critics for Saskatchewan and Alberta says they do not support the Private Member’s Bill introduced by Charlie Angus, the NDP MP for Timmons-James Bay. If Bill C-372 were to pass, it would mean no fossil fuel company could advertise or promote their products or mislead the public about the threats posed by the burning of fossil fuels. The federal NDP points to documents which reveal that oil companies knew the harms caused by their products as far back as 1954.
Saskatchewan’s Energy Critic, Aleana Young, says energy companies are important job creators and shouldn’t be singled out by advertising restrictions. There is already legislation around false advertising. She and Alberta’s Energy Critic say elected officials should instead be advancing policies focused on creating good-paying jobs and diversifying our economy while addressing climate change.
