U.S. President Donald Trump commented last night (Thurs) that tariffs against Canada and Mexico may not begin until April 2nd, with 25 per cent tariffs on everything except energy resources, which would have a 10 per cent tariff, but he changed his mind today and it’s back to the tariffs beginning next Tuesday.
Premier Scott Moe reacted to a social media post from Trump recently, where he stated that he wants the Keystone XL pipeline and his administration would make the approvals easy compared to the previous administration. The pipeline was to take oil from Alberta through Saskatchewan and into the U.S.
Premier Moe stated on X that effective immediately, all pipeline permits going east, west or south received in Saskatchewan will be considered pre-approved. The west to east pipeline would be the former Energy East pipeline which would take oil from Albert to New Brunswick, but it was cancelled in 2017. Earlier this month, Premier Moe siad he would support a new Energy East pipeline, but stipulated there would need to be a commitment from the federal government that it would be built and the government would support it, creating energy security for all Canadians.
Back in 2019, an Angus Reid poll indicated 58 per cent of respondents were in favour of the Energy East pipeline and that has grown to 65 per cent this year with 19 per cent opposed and 16 per cent can’t say.
