Last night around 7 p.m., Carrot River RCMP responded to a report of a seriously injured child under 10 at a residence on Shoal Lake Cree Nation; life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and the child was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The death was deemed suspicious, prompting Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes to take over the investigation; a suspect known to the child has been identified and taken into custody.

Authorities say there is no elevated risk to public safety, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
