Monday’s gathering in Saskatoon is the first face to face meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Canada’s premiers since the federal election in a campaign where Carney committed to slashing federal approval times on major infrastructure projects considered to be in the national interest.
The Western Premiers will want a commitment from the Prime Minister for a new economic corridor that would connect ports on the west coast with the Port of Churchill. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says, “It is the largest single generational opportunity that I’ve seen for economic success for not only for western Canadians but the entirety of our nation.”
He says he hopes in the meeting today with the Prime Minister that initiative will gain full support. Moe says this corridor would be able to ship oil, liquefied natural gas, uranium, electricity and hydroelectricity to Canadian and world markets.
