A mass stabbing at a Manitoba First Nation early this morning (Thursday) came on the third anniversary of a similar incident on the James Smith Cree nation in northeast Saskatchewan.
RCMP responded to a call from the Hollow Water First Nation, a couple of hours northeast of Winnipeg.
Eight community members—between the ages of 18 and 60—were stabbed at two different locations. An 18-year-old woman died, and the others were transported by air or ground ambulance to Winnipeg hospitals, some in serious condition.
The suspect—the victim’s 26-year-old brother Tyrone Simard of the Hollow River First Nation—fled the community in a stolen vehicle.
RCMP Superintendent Rob Lasson says the vehicle collided with an RCMP cruiser.
“The suspect, Tyrone, succumbed to his injuries on scene due to the fatal motor vehicle accident. The officer driving the police car northbound was injured and was transferred to hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries.”
The chief of the Hollow River First Nation Larry Barker called on everyone to support each other during the grieving process.
