The Virtual Health Hub will not open until at least early 2027, but the facility under construction at Whitecap Dakota First Nation is attracting plenty of attention.
The health hub will provide virtual health services for up to 30 remote communities initially.
Dr. Ivar Mendez is the director of the Virtual Care and Remote Presence Robotics Program at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine.
The federal Minister of Indigenous Services, Mandy Gull-Masty is impressed with the concept of the virtual health hub. She spoke to reporters following a Friday morning presentation at the Whitecap Dakota First Nation, about 35 kilometres south of Saskatoon.
A doctor at Whitecap will be able to examine information coming in from 30 remote locations—including x-rays and ultrasounds.
Dr. Mendez says thanks to technology, this hub will break down any hurdles or barriers that northern communities face in getting timely medical treatment..
