After years of having its services and programming spread across several locations, the Saskatoon Food Bank is bringing it all under one roof at a brand-new location.
The Food Bank’s Director, Laurie O’Connor, says the current facility on Avenue C has been a great, but cramped, space for many years, and it was time to start fresh. After years of searching for a building that checked all the boxes, the decision was finally made to build new.
A sod turning ceremony took place Friday morning at 425 Avenue P South, a parcel of land in Saskatoon’s Pleasant Hill neighbourhood.
O’Connor says not only will the new build be double the size of the current food bank on Avenue C, but over the next ten years, the amount of food brought through the warehouse will be able to double, as well.
“Having a purpose-built building that will help us increase food distribution in the coming years but also increase the other programming that we love to do is very exciting for us,” she beamed.
The three-acre lot will also provide enough space for a garden, the urban agriculture program, a commercial kitchen, and an expansion of the workplace training program
O’Connor anticipates construction will wrap up by spring of 2027.
