The Diefenbaker Canada Centre (DCC), along with the Canadian Centre for the Study of Co-operatives (CCSC) at the U of S are celebrating Canadian co-operatives with an exhibition called Community Powered.
Helanna Gessner, who is the Curatorial, Collections, and Exhibits Manager of the DCC says that Community Powered covers many aspects of co-operatives, relating to the past, present and future.
“It goes through how education is important, we discuss women’s history in co-operatives, indigenous co-operatives, and then look at things like the major FCL Co-ops, things like Credit Unions and then finally at the future, what’s next for the co-operative sector.”
Gessner says that some recognizable Saskatchewan co-operatives will be among those featured in the exhibit.
“We’ll get some of the in-depth looks at the different organizations that have really shaped the future of co-operatives. In Saskatchewan, for example, many people know the iconic Wheat Pool symbol. So we dive into the history of the Wheat Pool.”
Anyone interested in checking out Community Powered can see the exhibit at the DCC from noon to 4:30 p.m. from Wednesdays to Saturdays. The exhibit will be on display until April. Admission to get in is by donation.
