This year’s City of Saskatoon Remembrance Day Program will specifically commemorate two anniversaries: the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII and the 25th anniversary of the tomb of the unknown soldier.
Remembrance Day Committee Program Director Malcom Young says that the ceremony will also pay tribute to four Saskatchewan soldiers whose remains were never found.
“They paid the ultimate sacrifice, and their remains were never found and that’s Lieutenant Walter Grant, Lieutenant Albert Newberry, Flying Officer John O’Grady and Petty Officer Douglas Robertson. Each of them went to serve our country and were killed in service and their remains were not found. And so, we want to remember them.”
In this years’ service Major General Chris McKenna, who has family connections to Saskatchewan, will be taking the compliments of the parade.
Major General McKenna is a veteran of 31 years who has served in Eastern Europe, Afghanistan and Africa.
Young says that it is an honour to have Major General McKenna be part of the ceremonies.
“He told us that he was coming to Saskatoon and area for November 11th and we were honoured to have him participate, both by the fact that he is a Senior General Officer in the Armed Forces but more importantly that he’s a veteran of his own service.”
Doors open at 9:00 a.m., at SaskTel Centre with live coverage of the event begins at 9:30, with the pre-parade starting at 9:45 and the ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The program will air at www.saskatoonremembers.ca or Rogers TV Channel 10/105.
