CAA is reminding people to stay safe during the holidays season. They remind people that even if they aren’t leaving home over the holidays, there are still some important precautions to take.
Angel Blair, CAA’s Manager of Communications, says that it’s important to practice safe habits while cooking and baking, even with all of the added distractions of the holiday season.
“Make sure that you monitor your cooking, don’t leave anything unattended in your oven or on your stovetop. Make sure that you are doing things carefully, putting things away. You’re going to have a lot of people around, so there will be that hustle and bustle of the season. Make sure you have your carbon monoxide detector or your smoke alarm in good working condition. Make sure your matches and lighters are out of reach.”
Along with cooking and baking, Blair adds that it’s important to keep an eye on other potential hazards caused by decorations.
“Make sure that damaged light sets are thrown out, make sure your outlets are all safely secured when you plug in those Christmas lights. As far as trees, if you have an artificial tree, make sure those lights are in good working condition, if your tree is live, make sure it’s watered. They are a fire hazard if they dry out.”
She says that if you are hosting a holiday celebration for your family and friends, it’s a good idea to put some decorations that pose a safety risk out of reach.
“Just be careful and plan ahead for a lot of people in your house. So make sure that your decorations, if they’re breakable, they’re put up high. If you have anything like a candle that needs to be lit, make sure you have those out of the way. Make sure you don’t put them near other decorations.”
CAA says that no matter what you do for the holidays, safety should always be part of the plan.
