Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister spoke to reporters Wednesday from China and Anita Anand says there is no question the geo-political order changed with the illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022.
Anand says, “Over the course of the last few years the geopolitical environment changed substantially not only in terms of military conflict but also in terms of the economic environment where the economic order is becoming rewired. She notes that China is Canada’s second largest trading partner.
She points out that China is a country where they need to be at the table and have a negotiation. “And ensure while we are doing that, we are representing Canada’s security interests and interests of Canadians. As I said that is a complex issue, it is a complex relationship, but Prime Minister Carney is here to recalibrate the Canada-China relationship”, she concluded.
When asked about whether the minister thought a deal could be made around canola, she said all sectors of the Canadian economy are being considered.
Anand also said the government plans to grow non-U-S trade by at least 50 per cent over the next ten years.
