A second drug overdose alert has been issued in as many days, this time for Saskatoon.
The Ministry of Health says dangerous drugs are circulating in Saskatoon which may contain fentanyl, medetomidine or other unknown substances. Medetomidine is a veterinary sedative.
Prairie Harm Reduction (PHR) has reported six overdoses since January 26 requiring multiple doses of naloxone. Individuals experienced heavy sleeping, difficulty breathing, and in some cases medical intervention. While a direct link to the reported overdoses is unknown, one sample did have a confirmed presence of fentanyl and medetomidine.
It was dark blue pebble in appearance and was in some instances sold as fentanyl. The overdose alert is in effect for both the Punnichy area and Saskatoon until February 4th.
Yesterday the Ministry of Health has issued an overdose drug alert after there had been five suspected overdoses over the past two weeks in the Punnichy area and included one death. Punnichy is about 130 kilometres north of Regina.
