“Shock the World” almost happened on back-to-back nights, thanks in large part to Evan Gardner.
But, the C-H-L’s top-ranked team avoided being swept in a home-and-home series as the Prince Albert Raiders got by Gardner and the Saskatoon Blades 3-1 Sunday afternoon before 6,306 fans at SaskTel Centre. After falling 4-0 on Saturday night at home to the Bridge City Bunch, P-A recovered Sunday when Aiden Oiring broke a 1-1 tie on the Raiders’ 42nd shot on Gardner with 8:10 remaining in the third period. The goal came on a power play, the only man advantage score for Prince Albert in seven chances on the weekend. Ben Harvey opened the game scoring in the first period, David Lewandowski tied the score in the second period, setting the stage for Oiring’s third period heroics. Braeden Cootes added an empty net goal as the Raiders out-shot the Blue and Gold 48-27, including 23-5 in the third period. Lewandowski’s goal was his fourth in as many games for the Blades. The result put the Raiders on the cusp of being the first W-H-L team to clinch a playoff spot. P-A’s Magic Number is one point to do so over Red Deer as the Rebels nipped Vancouver 2-1 Sunday night. Saskatoon is back in action Tuesday when they host Calgary.
