The Saskatoon Blades absorbed one of their worst losses of the season at one of the worst times of the campaign Tuesday, falling 7-1 to the visiting Calgary Hitmen.

The Bridge City Bunch opened the scoring on Hunter Laing’s power play goal just past the four-minute mark. But, from there it was all Calgary, especially in the second period when the Hitmen scored five times – three of them on the power play – that insured Calgary, and not the Blue and Gold, would win their 26th game of the season. The Hitmen tallied three times in 52 seconds before the second period was two-and-a-half minutes old to break a 1-1 tie, then connected twice in 18 seconds later in the frame. The Hitmen scored the game’s last seven goals and out-shot the Blades 36-16 as the road team won for the third time in as many head-to-head match-ups between Saskatoon and Calgary this season. In all, the Hitmen scored four power play goals in as many chances and chased Evan Gardner, the W-H-L’s Goaltender-of-the-Month for January, from the crease after going ahead 6-1 late in the second period. The Hitmen improved to 59 points from 46 games, good for fourth place in the Eastern Conference – two points ahead of idle Brandon who have played 49 games while the Bridge City Bunch are sixth with 54 points through 50 games. The Blue and Gold will take their 25-21-4 record to Regina on Friday.
