Biggar RCMP says many owners of stolen credit card numbers which are being used to commit fraud, don’t know the cards are compromised which makes prevention methods difficult.
Sergeant Dereck Crozier with Biggar RCMP Detachment says they are asking businesses to break the cycle and prevent these types of purchases. He notes that the red flag on these purchases is when multiple credit card numbers are used to complete the purchase.
Sgt. Crozier says the fraudsters are attempting to make large purchases such as tires, power tools, and other goods not traceable on stolen credit cards and these attempts are often taking place over the phone.
Biggar RCMP say there have been a “number of fraud incidents for businesses to be aware of” where the fraudster asks merchants to run multiple credit card numbers through for them to complete the large purchase,” stated
Sgt. Crozier says. “The caller uses a false name and won’t answer questions about the credit card numbers or provide further details and they want to send a third-party courier to pick up their purchase.”
