The tragedy at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia began to unfold at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday after RCMP received a report of an active shooter at the school.
During the initial search of the school officers located multiple victims including a person believed to be the shooter who was deceased with what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound.
Six others not including the suspect were found deceased inside the school. Two victims were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries. Approximately 25 others were treated at the local medical centre for non-life-threatening injuries.
RCMP identified a secondary location believed connected to the school shooting. Two more people were found dead in a home.
In a news release Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander for the RCMP described it as a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and he said the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in the RCMP’s response.
He said, “Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”
Tumbler Ridge Secondary School is for students in Grades 7 to 12. Tumbler Ridge, a community of about 2,500 people is located approximately 122 kilometres southwest of Dawson Creek, B.C.
