When it comes to drama, the Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team has nothing on the Saskatoon Blades!
Shortly after killing off a 5-on-3 disadvantage, against the W-H-L’s top power play, the Bridge City Bunch won 3-2 over the Hitmen in Calgary on Kazden Mathies’ (pictured) breakaway goal at 2:13 of overtime. It was another victory for the road team in the season series with the visitors winning all four times and the teams splitting the wins. The Blue and Gold never trailed Saturday, but a win didn’t look to be in the cards when Tristen Doyle and Mathies took tripping and puck over glass penalties, respectively, 10 seconds apart in the final minute of the third period. However, the trio of Rowan Calvert, Isaac Poll and Jack Kachkowski blocked shots and passes and kept the Hitmen power play unit at bay to force overtime, then did the same in O-T, setting the stage for Mathies’ heroics. Doyle and Adam Halat scored the other goals for the Blades, who were out-shot 33-22. For Halat, like Jaggar John the night before in Red Deer, the goal was his first in the W-H-L and came against the Calgary team that drafted him in the fourth round of the 2024 Prospects Draft. Evan Gardner stopped 31 shots for his 21st win of the season and Saskatoon improved to 29-23-6 for the season, but are still in sixth place – five points behind Brandon and six back of Calgary in the Eastern Conference. The Bridge City Bunch will play seven of their final 10 games at home at SaskTel Centre – the first of which is Wednesday against the expansion Penticton Vees.
