Métis-Nation Saskatchewan’s Early Learning and Child Care Conference kicks off Friday at TCU Place.
MN-S Director of Education Andrea Fiss says this year’s theme is ‘Weaving the Future Together’, a nod to both the weaving of the Métis sash, and the intertwining of culture, community, and education.
“One of our goals in early learning and childcare is to bring a balance between our Métis cultural learning as well as best practices in the early learning field. So, our conference really beings those two worlds together and provides opportunities for citizens and early childhood educators to come and learn and grow.”
She says attendees will hear presentations from a Métis Elder panel, early learning education expert Leah Dorion, and play advocate Kristen Peterson.
“That’s kind of the two sides of the coin. One coming from a real cultural lens, and one coming from a really strong curriculum, play-based lens to meld those two worlds together.”
Fiss expects about 400 early learning and childhood educators to be in attendance for the two-day event.
“We provide resources and training to early childhood educators with the goal that they’re able to bring those teachings and learnings to their classrooms.”
The crowd will also get a sneak peak of the new childcare facility being established in Kensington via video presentation. Fiss says the centre will feel like a Métis space, with an exterior that resembles a log cabin, Métis specific toys and materials, and elements of Métis culture on the playground, as well.
