SGI is reminding motorists that police don’t need to suspect alcohol use to demand a Mandatory Alcohol Screening.
Heather Hubic with SGI says with Saskatchewan having one of the highest rates of impaired driving in Canada, mandatory screenings are one of the best ways to keep motorists safe.
“In 2024, impaired driving was a factor in 583 collisions, 350 people were injured, and 45 were killed in oour province because of impaired driving.”
Hubic assures that if you’re selected to take part in a test, it will be quick and painless. An officer will ask you to provide a breath sample, and if you pass, you’ll be sent on your way.
“They have the right to demand that roadside breath sample from every driver that they legally stop using that approved screening device, and they don’t need to suspect alcohol use to make this request.”
However, if you don’t comply with the officer’s demand, penalties could be as severe, or worse, than if you were caught impaired driving.
“That would include things like immediate roadside license suspensions, immediate 30-day vehicle impoundments.”
If you are impaired, Hubic reminds the public that there are several options for getting home that don’t include getting behind the wheel, such as finding a designated driver, catching a cab, or staying the night.
