Steele Bass stopped 30 shots for his third shutout of the season as the Prince Albert Raiders blanked the Saskatoon Blades 4-0 Saturday and put a damper on an otherwise successful evening for the W-H-L’s only continuously-operating franchise.
The Blue and Gold made their first three inductions into the 62-year-old franchise’s Hall-of-Fame prior to the contest, honouring former star and popular players Kelly Chase and Mark Wotton plus current Associate General Manager Steve Hildebrand before a season-high 10,861 fans at SaskTel Centre. The game started and ended with fireworks – a fight just 19 seconds into the game between Triston Mitchell-McElhone of the Bridge City Bunch and P-A defenceman Hubert Clarke plus a multi-player testosterone leak with 1:44 remaining as four Blades and two Raiders were sent to the locker room. In between, Prince Albert did pretty much the same as they did in Friday’s 4-0 victory at home – using their speed and skill to score some nice goals, two of them on the power play, while choking off most of Saskatoon’s offensive chances. The shots on goal were closer Saturday than on Friday, but the Raiders still held a 33-30 advantage. Brayden Dube scored twice for P-A with Alisher Sarkenov and Jonah Sivertson adding the other tallies. The Raiders finished the season on a six-game winning streak and a record of 52-10-6 for 110 points, first place in the Eastern Conference, and will face the eighth place Red Deer Rebels in the first round of the playoffs. The Bridge City Bunch, meanwhile, finished with a 34-27-7 mark for 75 points, sixth place in the Conference, and will open a best-of-seven Eastern quarter-final next Friday in Edmonton against the Oil Kings. The Blue and Gold will take a 128:04 goal-less streak into the series opener at Rogers Place.
