On the 8th Anniversary of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash the Humboldt Broncos Memorials Committee says asphalt work for the parking lot and pathways tender has been awarded and will take place at the crash site this year. Phase 2 of the project will focus on a monument to honour the 16 who died in the bus crash and the 13 who survived with their lives forever changed.
In October 2024 site preparation began with earth moving, creation of pathways and a sitting area.
Meanwhile, the plan for a new facility, a Tribute Centre in Humboldt, would include a theatre space, a field house and a second ice surface for the community.
The Memorial site is located 170 kilometres northeast of Humboldt at the intersection of Highway 35 and 335 where the bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior league team was hit by a semi that ran the stop sign. Humboldt Mayor Robert Muench says as these projects progress, they are also going to upgrade the refrigeration plant at the existing arena which is pushing 50 years old.
