Another strong start – scoring first and not relinquishing the lead served the Prince Albert Raiders well again on Wednesday as they completed a four-game sweep of the Saskatoon Blades with a 5-3 victory before 6,361 fans at SaskTel Centre.
P-A advances to the W-H-L’s Eastern Conference final against the Medicine Hat Tigers, starting a week from Friday at the Art Hauser Centre. Braeden Cootes got the Raiders started just 68 seconds into the game, banking a shot from below the goal-line off Bridge City Bunch goaltender Evan Gardner and in. Maddix McCagherty and Matyas Man added goals shortly thereafter, giving Prince Albert a 3-0 lead just 6:12 into the game, with an 8-0 edge on the shot clock. David Lewandowski stopped the bleeding for the Blue and Gold when his long shot from the right wing boards, just inside the Raiders’ blue-line, glanced off a P-A defender on the way and through the legs of Raiders’ goaltender Michal Orsulak, ending his shutout streak at 134:49. The Blades also got second period goals from Hunter Laing and Tyler Parr, but Prince Albert scored momentum-killing goals in each of the first and second frames by Daxon Rudolph and Max Heise, respectively. Once again, Saskatoon had bad luck on offence, hitting three posts. But, it was the Bridge City Bunch’s best effort of the series as they scored three times after only tallying once in the first three games combined and only being out-shot by a 30-26 margin – the closest of any of the four games in the series. In the end, the Raiders were too much for the Blue and Gold – something that was somewhat expected, considering they had 18 more wins and 35 points during the regular-season than the Blades did.
