The non profit Angus Reid Institute says its recent survey shows the majority, at 55 per cent, support the Westcoast LNG pipeline across the country as well as in B.C. where the Institute says support outnumbers opposition by three-to-one.
Angus Reid says their survey also indicates that about half, 48 per cent in Canada and more than two in five in British Columbia believe the federal government is “doing too little to build new pipeline capacity”. Nationally, 31 per cent say the federal government’s approach is about right, while 21per cent say there is too much of a focus on building pipelines.
The latter group has shrunk by six points compared to 2019 when the Trans Mountain expansion was being debated.
And the Angus Reid Institute says since 2019, there has been a major shift in priorities around energy police because at that time, more believed protecting the environment, at 55 per cent, should be a bigger focus than economic growth (45%). Now, three-in-five, or 61 per cent say growing the economy should be the bigger focus for energy policy than stewarding the environment.
