The NDP want Saskatchewan’s Labour Minister to launch an investigation for what they say are concerns from delivery drivers over unsafe working conditions.
The opposition party also wants the investigation to encompass a broader review of the laws governing precarious and gig work.
Standing alongside delivery workers Monday, Labour Shadow Minister Nathaniel Teed said the workers who deliver packages in the community every day using their own vehicles and paying out of pocket for
fuel, maintenance and insurance. He also says many say they are barely scraping by.
The NDP says workers with Intelcom and Dragonfly Shipping allege the company has drastically reduced per-package compensation while the cost of living continues to soar.
Workers also pointed to rising fuel prices, increasing vehicle maintenance costs and car insurance rate hikes on the horizon next month. As well they receive no benefits, no guaranteed wages and fear speaking out could cost them their jobs.
