After a pair of easy wins over Weyburn in southeastern Saskatchewan to start the 2026 W-C-B-L regular-season, the Saskatoon Berries had to scratch and claw their way to a home-opening 7-6 triumph over the Beavers Saturday at NexGen Patch at Cairns Field.
Left-fielder Nash Nichols drove in shortstop Nathan Houston with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 6-6 tie. It was Nichols’ first hit in three games and gave Saskatoon their first lead of the day in front of a standing room-only crowd of 2,218. Three times Weyburn took a lead on the Berries by scores of 2-0, 3-2 and 6-4 with Saskatoon rallying every time to tie. The Berries didn’t help themselves by committing six errors in the field, however the irony is that a Weyburn error allowed Houston to reach base in the eighth inning and eventually score the go-ahead run. Tanner Hosick, the fifth pitcher of the day for Saskatoon, was the winner. The Berries will attempt to complete a sweep of the first four games of the season against the Beavers when Saskatoon hosts Weyburn again on Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock. Returning right-hander Michael Sall will be the starting pitcher for the Berries.
