Saskatoon Fire Chief Yvonne Raymer says the investigator needs to interview witnesses and neighbours and does not to rush to a final conclusion. The $3-million damage estimate covers the four destroyed homes on the 400 block of Geary Crescent as well as twenty properties that sustained heat, smoke or water damage.
Chief Raymer says conditions at the time of the fire were “30-30-30” making it a challenge for firefighters. The “30-30-30” refers to the temperature above 30 degrees, wind higher than 30km/hr and relative humidity lower than 30 per cent. She says some exterior building materials are more fire resistant than others. The fire chief added that Saskatoon is not any different than other cities when it comes to neighborhood development and the distance between residences.
Fortunately, all four home owners were fully insured, although there is an unofficial report that a tenant in one of the homes had no insurance.
