The new multibillion-dollar agreement signed Thursday by Prime Minister Mark Carney and BC Premier David Eby sheds more light on the future of Alberta’s proposed pipeline and the North Coast tanker ban.
The agreement ensures that the North Coast tanker ban will stay in place, and that if a pipeline goes ahead, that residents in BC will be compensated for the environment risks.
Eby explained, “This agreement doesn’t require us to support any pipeline proposal from Alberta. However, as I’ve said before, we recognize our constitutional position, and we do not have the authority to stop a new pipeline. We will not be going to court to fight a pipeline project. Instead, we will ensure we fulfill our constitutional obligations in good faith.”
As of now, pipelines are under federal jurisdiction.
The agreement also included advancements in work force training, childcare, unionized labour, and water shed protection in BC.
