Legendary Baltimore Orioles’ manager Earl Weaver once famously said, “The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three-run homers.” The Saskatoon Berries did those three things very well Sunday in registering a 10-1 victory over the Swift Current 57s at Cairns Field.
Diego Quinonez pitched a strong six innings, aided by solid defence, while right fielder Ethan Murdoch lined a three-run home run in the fifth inning that turned a 1-0 Saskatoon lead into an insurmountable 4-0 advantage as the Berries completed a sweep of four head-to-head meetings with the 57s over the weekend. Murdoch belted a second round-tripper, of the solo variety, against his hometown team – giving him six hits in 14 at bats against Swift Current in the four games, including three homers. Five other Saskatoon position players contributed two hits – shortstop Brock Laird with a pair of singles and two R-B-I, designated hitter Gavin Panks with a double and a single, third baseman Mason Roell with a double and a single as well as a run batted in, first baseman Josh Henson with two singles and two R-B-I plus catcher Aidan Marien with a pair of singles and a couple of runs batted in. Brody Wrench, Clay Mixon and Carter Kopp followed Quinonez to the mound for the Berries, each pitching an inning and allowing just one hit after Quinonez limited the 57s to a run on four hits and struck out five. The four straight wins over Swift Current upped Saskatoon’s record to 25-11 – still tied for first place with Moose Jaw in the W-C-B-L’s East Division while the 57s dropped into the East basement with an 11-22 log. The Berries have Monday off, then host the final West Division visitor to Cairns Field for the 2026 season when the Lethbridge Bulls arrive for games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Following are post-game media scrum interviews with head coach Joe Carnahan, Murdoch and Quinonez plus a picture of the final scoreboard…..
