Saskatoon Public Library’s administration is announcing that the new central library will be built on time and on budget, mostly.
A release from SPL confirmed a 2027 completion date and that no new library levy increases will be required to fund the capital project. However, the project did come in $16 million over budget, but this will be offset by existing library reserves, meaning the funding plan for the new central library remains unchanged.
Once complete, the average Saskatoon homeowner will see an increase of $1.60/year to the library levy in 2026. There will be no increases in 2027.
The project’s total cost will be $150 million. The SPL release assures that the final budget also includes an allowance of nearly $3 million for potential tariff impacts and $8 million in additional contingencies.
Construction of the new library continues to progress on schedule, and a grand opening is planned for 2027.
