To say the Saskatoon Police Service had a busy weekend would be a massive understatement!
A 23-year-old woman was charged with assaulting a police officer when she bit an officer while attempting to place her in an SPS detention cell. Police had responded to a report of an intoxicated female causing property damage and refusing to leave a hotel in the 100 block of Circle Drive North shortly after midnight Monday.
An 18-year-old man faces a handful of charges after an attempt to steal several bottles of alcohol from a liquor store in the 100 block of Gibson Bend at about 7:45 Sunday evening. When confronted by store staff, the man brandished bear spray and attempted to flee on foot. He was located by police a short time later, concealing a can of bear spray in his waistband.
There was an aggravated assault Sunday afternoon. Just before 1:30, officers responded to a report of an injured person in the 300 block of Avenue M South. A 47-year-old was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. No arrest has been made.
Saskatoon Police interrupted an attempted drug transaction Sunday morning in the downtown area. Around 10 a.m., officers observed a man in the area of 23rd Street East and 3rd Avenue North. Initially, the man resisted arrest and other officers arrived to assist taking him into custody. A 23 year old man is charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, two counts of Possession of a Dangerous Weapon and two counts of Possession of a Concealed Weapon.
Thanks to help from the SPS Air Support Unit, two men were arrested after attempting to flee from officers. The incident began shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday when police spotted a black Dodge Ram driving at a high rate of speed and disobeying traffic signals in the area of Witney Avenue and 23rd Street West. The truck exited Saskatoon and continued to drive in a dangerous manner through Warman and Martensville with A-S-U alerting the Corman Park Police Service who were able to successfully deploy stop sticks at Range Road 3041 and Township Road 393. The 24-year-old male driver and 20-year-old male passenger attempted to flee on foot, but were arrested and face several charges.
A 31-year-old man faces charges of possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, carrying concealed weapon and carrying concealed prohibited weapon following reports of a man armed with a hatchet and looking into the yards of residences in the 600 block of 20th Street West. Officers arrived on the scene shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday and took him into custody after finding him in possession of a hatchet and butterfly knife.
A 40-year old man is facing several weapons charges after being arrested Saturday evening on the 800 Block of Avenue P North.
Witnesses says the man was acting erractically. Police indicate the man had open alcohol and was also found to have a machete, box cutter, scalpel and a metal dumbbell bar concealed in his pants.
A 47-year-old man faces 10 weapons-related charges after failing to stop for police and being in possession of a loaded sawed-off rifle in the early morning hours of Saturday. Officers were unable to successfully perform a traffic stop on a vehicle disobeying traffic signals at about 3 a.m. Saturday in the area of Central Avenue and 108th Street West. The Air Support Unit tracked the vehicle to the 100 block of Kellins Crescent where the driver exited the vehicle and attempted to hide between two houses – found by a police service dog.
A 21-year-old female driver and a male passenger were arrested shortly after 8:45 p.m. Friday for failing to stop for police in a stolen vehicle. A canine officer spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of 45th Street and Avenue C North. While the vehicle refused to stop, the A-S-U assisted the ground officers and stop sticks were successfully deployed on Airport Drive. The 21-year-old woman is charged with evade police, possession of stolen property over five thousand dollars and breaching court-imposed conditions. The male passenger was arrested on outstanding warrants.
