The provincial NDP intends to introduce legislation during the fall sitting of the legislature to require a formal public notification of all emergency room closures in Saskatchewan.
According to the NDP, it has identified at least 134 emergency room closures totaling 1,325 days from December 2024 to the end of April.
The NDP Rural and Remote Health Shadow Minister Jared Clarke says often the only notifications come through social media channels of an impacted municipality. Clarke referred to a situation earlier this month when patients in Outlook were told to go to Davidson when their emergency room was temporarily closed. However, it turns out that the Davidson hospital was in the same situation and did not have its emergency room open either.
