Ontario Premier Doug Ford says Canada needs to keep its 100-per cent tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles.(EV’s)
In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ford says lifting the Chinese EV tariffs would jeopardize 157,000 direct jobs in Ontario and potentially put Canada in opposition to the United States.
This comes as the federal government reviews the EV tariffs as it talks to China about easing restrictions on imports of Canadian canola, peas and pork. Ford’s letter to Carney does not mention agricultural products.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe was in China last week meeting with officials in the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
In addition to the letter, Doug Ford was also busy on social media—one day in advance of Carney’s meeting with Mexico’s president. The Ontario premier stated that Mexico is ripping off Canadian and US workers by allowing itself to become a backdoor to cheap Chinese products and parts. He says Mexico has a choice to make— stand with Washington or Beijing.
