If you get a kid at your door that looks a little too old to be trick-or-treating this Halloween, there is a good chance they’re there for a better cause.
For the 20th year, student volunteers at Bishop James Mahoney and St. Joseph high schools will be collecting nonperishable food items for the Saskatoon Food Bank through Halloweening for Hunger.
Shelby Anderson with the food bank says the initiative has grown tremendously over the past two decades.
“Last year was our biggest year. They had 33,000 pounds of food collected, and over the last 20 years, they’ve had 200,000 pounds of food collected, so this initiative has been huge.”
The teens will be making their way through neighborhoods in Saskatoon, Warman, and Martensville.
“On the 31st and the 3rd we will be going to the high schools to collect the donations. Rosenau Transport will have their trucks there, and they’re going to help us load everything and bring it to the food bank.”
If you won’t be home Friday evening, food donations can be dropped off in the blue bins at local grocery stores or at the food bank itself at 202 Avenue C South.
A grand total of donations collected will be announced on November 3rd.
