The NDP is sounding alarm bells over a provincial government proposal which would prevent non-citizen members and members under the age of 18 from voting at annual general meetings, conventions or within constituency races.
The vote on the Sask. Party Constitution amendment will take place this weekend during the party’s convention in Saskatoon.
Immigration Critic Noor Burki says these changes would be heartbreaking for the two impacted groups.
“Immigrant communities are growing communities. They come to this province. They call this place home. They come through legal immigrant process. They are paying taxes. If they are not having a voting right, that is a big slap to the face.”
He says party involvement is a great way for youth and immigrants to get affiliated with local politics and considers these changes discrimination.
Moe has previously justified the action with the fact that non-citizens and youth can’t vote in provincial or federal elections.
